Are you hoping to snag a ticket to your favorite movie with ultimate “surround-sound?” Well then, you’re in luck because the New York Philharmonic’s The Art of the Score series returns to David Geffen Hall on September 12, 2023, which means you can hear the orchestra perform music scores live while watching films on-screen.
As the unofficial kick-off for its 2023-24 season, David Newman will return to conduct the New York Phil in Leonard Bernstein’s score to West Side Story (2021) on September 12 – 14 & 17, 2023. On December 20 – 23, 2023, Anthony Parnther will make his NY Phil debut to conduct the orchestra in Ludwig Göransson’s Oscar-winning score to Marvel Studios’ Black Panther. In the new year, the orchestra, conducted by Norman Huynh in his NY Phil debut, will take the stage to perform the score to Vertigo on January 23 – 26, 2024.
In collaboration, Lincoln Center and the NY Phil will present a special program on January 28, 2024, entitled The Art of the Score: The Movie Music of Terence Blanchard. The program will highlight Blanchard’s film scores in collaboration with director Spike Lee, including Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, 25th Hour, BlacKkKlansman, and Da 5 Bloods. Blanchard will perform the trumpet with his quintet, the E-Collective, and the NY Phil.
For one night only, using the new Ronnie and Lawrence Ackman Digital Organ in David Geffen Hall, organist and composer Cameron Carpenter will perform his original score for solo organ to the silent film Metropolis on February 6, 2024. Finally, rounding out the series, Constantine Kitsopoulos will return to conduct the NY Phil in John Williams’s Oscar-winning score to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial on May 17 – 19, 2024.
This is the 10th Anniversary of The Art of the Score series, and you can learn more about it in the NY Phil’s press release here and see event details and purchase tickets here. You can also purchase tickets over the phone at (212) 875-5656 or in person at the Welcome Center at David Geffen Hall.
