From August 18–23, Kaufman Music Center (129 West 67th Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue) is hosting its annual SummerFest, which offers a series of free public events where you can witness world-class masterclasses and enjoy incredible student performances. It’s a rare chance to witness some of the most talented young musicians and renowned faculty in action, with no tickets required.
SummerFest is an intensive week-long program for advanced pianists, violinists, and cellists aged 14 to 22. Participants are selected to study with a prestigious roster of guest artists from top institutions like The Juilliard School, The Colburn School, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. The curriculum includes masterclasses, private lessons, and chamber ensemble coaching, providing these promising young artists with an unrivaled learning experience. This year’s guest faculty includes acclaimed performers such as pianists Richard Goode and Orli Shaham, violinist Ilya Kaler, and cellist Peter Wiley.
Throughout the week, you can observe daily masterclasses led by these world-class musicians, held from 11:00am to 1:00pm. These sessions offer a unique look at the high-level instruction given to the festival’s participants, showcasing the artistry and dedication that define SummerFest. In the afternoons, you can hear the festival’s participants showcase their talents at student recitals, which take place Monday through Friday at 4:15pm and on Saturday at 3:30 pm in the esteemed Merkin Hall.
