As the weather is starting to cool down this fall, commercial activity in Lincoln Square is heating up! We’re excited to share several updates about restaurants, businesses, and schools opening and upgrading their operations in the neighborhood.
Unglo, a Thai BBQ Restaurant, Debuts in Lincoln Square
Longtime residents and visitors to Lincoln Square will fondly remember 35 West 64th Street between Broadway and Central Park West as the home to Picholine, the beloved French restaurant. Now there’s a reason for foodies to again return to the address: Unglo, a Thai BBQ restaurant, opened there on September 5.
The space has been completely transformed with a luxurious new interior featuring a mix of clay walls, stone tables, and glass accents. A highlight of the restaurant is its custom copper pans, embedded in the tables. These pans are essential to Moo Krata, a Thai style of dining that can be described as a combination of Korean barbecue and Japanese or Chinese hot pot. Unglo is Manhattan’s first Moo Krata restaurant, and it gets its name from the charcoal stove traditionally used in Thailand for this type of cuisine.
Unglo comes from a strong pedigree of Thai restaurants in New York City. It is backed by the same owners as Soothr, Thai noodle bar near Union Square, and Chalong, the Southern Thai restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen. “Each dish is a standout,” wrote New Yorker staff writer Hannah Goldfield of Chalong’s menu. Luckily for Lincoln Square, Chalong’s chef, Nate Limwong, is also leading the kitchen at Unglo. Unglo’s wide-ranging menu includes tasting sets (starting at $48 per person) as well as á la carte options.
Make sure to check out this unique dining experience—reservations are available on Open Table.
Central Park West Dentistry Opens New, Larger Office in Lincoln Square
Central Park West Dentistry, a general and family dentistry office that previously had two smaller locations in the West 60s, has found a new home in Lincoln Square at 1881 Broadway (West 62nd Street).
The new space, which covers the building’s entire fourth floor, has twice as many exam rooms as the practice’s previous locations. This expanded capacity is making it even easier for patients to make an appointment. In fact, something that distinguishes CPW Dentistry is its availability: The practice only closes twice per year, on Thanksgiving and Christmas. From early in the morning till late in the evening, the office remains open to accommodate their patients’ busy schedules.
It’s this commitment to service that has allowed CPW Dentistry to establish longtime relationships with its patients. CPW Dentistry dates back to 1998 and has tens of thousands of patient records on file. “Patient #1 is still being actively seen,” said. Dr. John Lhota, CPW Dentistry’s owner, as well as many other of the practice’s earliest patients.
CPW Dentistry is also notable for incorporating advanced technologies into its practice. The new space is equipped with a CBCT scan, intra-oral cameras, and ultra-sonic cleaning tools that vibrate at 25,000 movements per second. These technologies are not necessarily widespread across other dental offices, but they are commonly used by CPW Dentistry’s practitioners.
CPW Dentistry has 50 staff members, including three specialists—an endodontist, periodontist, and oral surgeon. This robust team limits CPW Dentistry’s need to refer out patients, meaning that locals can find all the care they need right here in the neighborhood.
Thank you to Central Park West Dentistry for keeping Lincoln Square in good health!
Rosa Mexicano Reopens in a New Space in the Empire Hotel
For 25 years, Rosa Mexicano has been a standby for where to find great Mexican food and a lively atmosphere in Lincoln Center. This month, the restaurant celebrates its move to a new location on the same block, starting the next chapter of this institution’s history in the neighborhood.
Patrons can find the same menu and drinks they love at the new address (44 West 63rd Street) on the second floor of New York City’s iconic Empire Hotel. The new space has expanded dining areas, multiple bars, vibrant event spaces, and a refreshed design that still harkens back in some ways to the original restaurant. The plaster statuettes of leaping divers, made famous by designer David Rockwell, are there to greet patrons as they make their way upstairs.
Now that Rosa Mexicano’s new space is open, there’s never been a better time for family and friends to get together for a round of margaritas. Reservations can be made on Rosa Mexicano’s website.
New Details Emerge About the Forthcoming Venture from Daniel Boulud
Star chef and restauranteur Daniel Boulud has shared more information about the exciting new restaurant that’s replacing his three longtime establishments on Broadway and West 64th Street—Boulud Sud, Bar Boulud, and Épicerie Boulud.
The new venture, Brasserie Boulud, will pay homage to the restaurants he frequented growing up in Lyon, France. “A brasserie is not a café, not a bistro, not a bouchon,” he wrote on Instagram. “In France, it’s ‘le grand restaurant’ of everyday life—lively, generous, open from morning to late, with seasonal classics, great seafood, and dishes that reflect both regional tradition and the spirit of grande cuisine.”
The renovated space will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, serving some favorite dishes from Boulud Sud and Bar Boulud, as well as new additions to the menu. Across 7,500 square-feet and two floors, patrons can explore a 170-seat dining room, a 27-seat central bar, a speakeasy, and private dining rooms.
The opening is on track to take place later this year!
Public Elementary School Welcomes Its First Students
A much-needed Early Childhood Learning center from the New York City Department of Education (DOE) has opened its doors at 1972 Broadway (at West 66th Street) for the start of the school year.
The new school is a District 75 program, meaning it is for children with special needs (such as autism, cognitive delays, emotional disabilities, and sensory impairments). The facility has six, completely renovated classrooms, each hosting six to eight students. Its small class sizes and specialized teaching staff offer an ideal environment for young children to grow and develop.
Next year, the DOE plans to add early childhood classes alongside the District 75 program. This new, light-filled facility—located near the 66th Street subway station and M10 and M72 bus stops—is helping to make Lincoln Square more convenient and affordable for families in the area.
Good luck to these young learners!
