The New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) recently released a new and improved Storefront Design Guide, offering tips and inspiration for thoughtful storefront design. The guide highlights large- and small-scale improvements that business owners can make to support Lincoln Square’s mission of creating a clean, safe, and beautiful neighborhood.
A key recommendation from SBS involves modernizing security systems. Consider upgrading to a contemporary security camera system. They are a great way to deter retail theft and vandalism, while allowing you to view footage of your business and merchandise 24/7. Both the New York Police Department and the Manhattan District Attorney encourage the use of security cameras, but remember to replace tapes regularly if you have an analog system.
Additionally, SBS highlights ten tips and strategies for creating active and engaging storefronts. Many businesses in our district already serve as stellar examples of inviting storefront design, but SBS offers additional advice to keep in mind, such as maintaining clear signage, awnings, lighting, and storefront framing to contribute to a more vibrant and attractive business presence. Be sure to follow all the city codes and regulations when making storefront updates (conveniently outlined in the guide).
While we haven’t observed any commercial businesses in the district with non-compliant gates, keep in mind that enforcement of Local Law 75 (2009) will begin July 1, 2026. Businesses with security gates should ensure that gates allow at least 75% visibility from the sidewalk. Non-compliant businesses may face fines from the NYC Department of Buildings.
Finally, regular maintenance is essential to keeping your storefront and Lincoln Square looking its best! So, make sure you wash your windows and signs, repair broken windows and lighting fixtures, and refresh window displays. These are simple steps to attract customers and maintain an appealing storefront presence.
