Remove Standing Water From Your Property

Property owners and managers are required to eliminate standing water on their properties beginning April 1 in order to control mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed in standing water and can spread West Nile virus and other diseases, and keeping properties free from accumulated water is the best way to protect the community. Removing standing water is also required under Section 151.03 of the NYC Health Code from April 1 through October 31, with failure to comply resulting in summonses subject to fines. If standing water cannot be removed, it can be treated with Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis), a product that kills young mosquitoes.
