Are you looking for frugal food options? Two free mobile apps – Too Good To Go and Food For All – are helping New Yorkers get deals on treats from their favorite eateries, while also helping reduce food waste across the city. For years, several other organizations throughout the city, such as City Harvest, Rethink Food and NYC Zero Waste, have been working to secure food waste and provide it to communities in need. These two apps not only join in on their efforts, but also offer people a chance to get food at a lower cost from food establishments.
Too Good To Go is available through a mobile app and shows users nearby grocery stores, cafes and restaurants that plan to sell “surprise bags” of food for a reduced price at the end of the day. Originally getting its start in Europe, Too Good To Go just launched service in New York City this past September. In Lincoln Square, Breads Bakery (1890 Broadway at West 63rd Street) has already signed up to participate in the program. At the end of the day, Breads offers a surprise bag of goodies for just $4.99 – a $15 value! There are other food establishments just outside of our district that have signed up. Food for All is a similar app that offers delicious meals from hundreds of restaurants and cafes for at least 50% off. Unlike Too Good to Go, Food for All gives consumers food options on what to expect from their purchase from each food establishment. And, Food For All has created two initiatives to help both restaurants and people in need throughout the COVID-19 crisis. First, to help struggling restaurants, you can pre-order Food for All Meals from your favorite participating eatery, where 100% of the proceeds go directly towards the restaurant. Additionally, Food For All is helping bring free hot meals to people in need. Donors can contribute any amount, and donations are transferred to recipients’ Food for All accounts in form of meal credits, which can be used on the app to purchase surplus meals from local eateries.
