Public Safety Update in Lincoln Square

We’ve all seen the tabloids, so while crime is on top of everyone’s minds we thought we would share the latest in Lincoln Square. According to the NYPD’s latest Compstat numbers, which you can view by clicking here, crime throughout the City is on the rise.  Lincoln Square, which falls mostly within the confines of the 20th Precinct, is still one of the safest neighborhoods in the City, though the latest reports from the NYPD show that the neighborhood has experienced an uptick in a number of index crimes, including grand larcenies, which is theft of property with a value of over $1,000. As of February 6, 2022, grand larcenies in the 20th Precinct are up 68.4%, year to date. So what do we do about it?

Knowledge is power and perhaps one of the best tools against fighting crime.  Recently, the NYPD put together a situational awareness bulletin on personal safety that you can view by clicking here. This informative bulletin was designed “to assist an organization’s personnel in maintaining personal safety throughout their travels and all other facets of their life. It is meant to inspire others to maintain a healthy amount of awareness and to adopt a mindset that reduces their chance of being a target of a criminal element.”  We suggest you read this bulletin and share with your tenants, employees, and residents. There are also general crime prevention tips on the NYPD’s site here: Crime Prevention and Safety Tips – NYPD (nyc.gov).

Reading the headlines can be alarming, but we know that our partners at the NYPD and in City government are determined to make sure that New York City remains one of the safest big cities in the country.  Recently, a number of BIDs throughout Manhattan as well as local business owners, members of law enforcement, and social service providers, were invited to be part of the “Manhattan Small Business Alliance” which was recently formed by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg “to reduce shoplifting and commercial robberies in partnership with small business leaders in every neighborhood of Manhattan.”  The Alliance will meet regularly to analyze and review data, draft recommendations, and develop solutions to these very complicated issues surrounding public safety. You can read more about this new initiative by clicking here.

Early on in the pandemic we created a great communication link with our property owners, building managers and businesses and have been able to quickly disseminate important information related to public safety. If you’re a Lincoln Square property owner, building manager or business and not on the list, please reach out to us at info@lincolnsquarebid.org and we will add you! We will continue to use all of the tools at our disposal to help make Lincoln Square a safe and welcoming neighborhood to shop, eat and visit.

And, remember if you see something, say something and call 911 in case of an emergency!
