SUMMARY:Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture
DESCRIPTION:Crafted from brass\, gold\, and semi-precious stones\, Douriean Fletcher’s boldly sculptural designs articulate Black identity\, embody spiritual meaning\, and have helped define cinematic characters and imagined worlds. The exhibition documents and explores how ideas of Afrofuturism materialize in Fletcher’s work\, highlighting her research into African and African American jewelry design and efforts to build aesthetic and cultural bridges between Black communities\, countries\, continents\, and histories torn apart by colonialism\, slavery\, and oppression. Presenting 75 works from the artist’s collection\, Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture tells the inspiring story of Fletcher’s evolution from self-taught metalsmith to an influential designer whose handmade adornments have shaped memorable aesthetics in contemporary cinema\, most notably Marvel Studios’ Black Panther film franchise. \nPhoto credit: BJ the Photographer/Brittany Houston-Johnson

SUMMARY:Designing Motherhood
DESCRIPTION:Designing Motherhood: Things that Make and Break Our Births will explore the arc of human reproduction through a design lens\, inviting audiences to consider how designs developed over the last 150 years have shaped reproductive health. The exhibition broadly explores the intersections of design\, access\, and experiences of (in)fertility\, pregnancy\, postpartum\, and parenthood\, and includes more than 250 manufactured products\, speculative design projects\, medical devices and tools\, graphic materials\, contemporary artworks\, and video. Combining art\, design\, and activism\, Designing Motherhood aims to deepen the cultural awareness and dialogue surrounding design for reproductive health and well-being. \nThis exhibition is part of the Designing Motherhood project\, a first-of-its-kind consideration of the arc of human reproduction through the lens of design. Designing Motherhood is an award-winning book (MIT Press\, 2021)\, touring exhibition\, narrative portraiture initiative\, open-source curriculum\, public program series\, and Instagram account. The project is collaboratively organized by Juliana Rowen Barton\, PhD\, Michelle Millar Fisher\, PhD (co-founder)\, Zoë Greggs\, Gabriella Nelson\, and Amber Winick (co-founder). Over the years\, the project has further been shaped by thought partners and supporters including Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, the Graham Foundation\, Maternity Care Coalition\, and Neighborhood Birth Center\, among many others.

SUMMARY:Dana Barnes: Untamed Gestures
DESCRIPTION:The first major museum exhibition spotlighting the artist’s singular vision\, Dana Barnes: Untamed Gestures features monumental hand-formed fiber works alongside a fully immersive recreation of Barnes’s Lower East Side studio in New York City. Barnes’s sculptural landscapes composed of fibers such as merino\, yak\, alpaca\, and silk create a compelling tactile environment in which motion and stillness\, as well as strength and fragility\, coexist in dynamic tension. Inspired by the slow\, persistent forces of nature\, Barnes twists\, knots\, and fuses her materials into sprawling\, living forms that sag\, climb\, and unfurl across the gallery space. Her works pulse with a quiet vitality\, inviting viewers into a dialogue between materiality and metamorphosis. \nThe exhibition’s immersive studio experience meticulously replicates Barnes’s original workspace\, a former 19th-century synagogue once home to Abstract Expressionist painter Pat Passlof. Within the space\, visitors will encounter a laboratory of creativity: overflowing sacks of colorful fibers\, experimental maquettes\, geological fragments\, and handmade tools bearing the patina of daily use. A self-directed drawing exercise will invite visitors to participate in the same spirit of wonder and material exploration that animates Barnes’s practice. \nPhoto credit: Daniel Root Photography

SUMMARY:The Mad MAD World of Jonathan Adler
DESCRIPTION:The Mad MAD World of Jonathan Adler is an invitation into the glamorous\, witty\, and wonderful universe of celebrated potter and designer Jonathan Adler. In his first curatorial role\, Adler presents more than 60 works from the Museum’s permanent collection alongside his own iconic designs. A playful and irreverent perspective on craft history\, the exhibition illuminates the designer’s love of objects\, materials\, and the makers whose legacies precede his own. \nThe exhibition is organized as a thematic tour of Adler’s fascinations: Authentica celebrates the sleek forms of mid-century modern ceramics; Optimistica embraces exuberance in all its forms; Funkyana and Kottler-ia explore craft’s capacity for satire and subversion; Erotica turns up the heat with sensual works in ceramic\, fiber\, and glass; and Americalia\, Metallica\, and Animalia round out the exhibition with patriotic pastiche\, glimmering metalwork\, and Adler’s Mother Nature-inspired menagerie. \nThe exhibition installation is designed by Simon Doonan\, author\, TV personality\, legendary window dresser\, former Creative Director of Barneys New York—and Adler’s husband. Works from Adler’s own studio appear throughout the exhibition\, massed in striking tableaux and staged in a visual dialogue with the Museum’s collection objects. Adler has built an international reputation for his innovative approach to design\, which deftly combines humor\, impeccable style\, and skilled craftsmanship. The exhibition marks a return to the time and place it all began—in 1993 he sold his first pots in the Museum’s store (then known as the American Craft Museum). The Mad MAD World of Jonathan Adler brings his creative journey full circle. \n

In 1799\, Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand of Brunswick had given Spohr a position in his court orchestra. The Duke also paid for him to accompany Eck as a pupil on a tour to St. Petersburg in 1802–1803 to complete his training as a violinist. In 1804 Spohr made his first independent concert tour of Germany\, gaining a reputation as one of the country’s leading violinists\, and in 1805 he was invited to lead the court orchestra in Gotha. \nSpohr (1784–1859) was a dominant force in German music and was as famous as Mozart and Beethoven. Sometimes called “The Forgotten Master\,” he is considered the greatest classical violinist of his time\, and one of the most admired and respected composers in his day. He served in a number of court positions\, he was the celebrated leading violin virtuoso\, he was one of the most sought-after and prolific composers of the first half of the 19th century\, and is considered a forerunner of early Romanticism. He also was an ideas man—he invented the chin rest\, introduced the use of the baton and rehearsal numbers\, developed the double quartet after Andreas Romberg first proposed the idea\, revived the music of Bach and Handel\, and he was the author of an influential violin method\, as well as a wonderful autobiography that included details his many travels throughout Europe. In addition to his musical activities\, he was a family man who enjoyed a happy social life and varied pursuits like swimming\, ice-skating\, hiking\, gardening\, and painting. \nSCHUBERT 3 Lieder ▪ n.d.\n~ from a selection of 6 songs arranged by Carl Baermann for clarinet and piano \nBaermann’s arrangements are notable for their fidelity to the original vocal lines and their exploration of the expressive possibilities of the clarinet. They appeared as Op. 88 in Baermann’s Collected Works. \nIV “Lob der Thränen” (In praise of tears) D.711 was Schubert’s setting of August Schlegel’s eulogy to the power of tears to bring renewal and redemption (1818–1821). \nV “Gretchen am Spinnrade” (Gretchen at the spinning wheel) D.118 is based on a text from Goethe’s Faust\, depicting Gretchen’s emotions as she longs for Faust while spinning at her wheel (1814). \nII “Wohin” is the second song from the cycle Die schöne Müllerin D. 795\, which tells of a young miller who falls in love with the miller’s daughter. The cycle follows his story of unrequited love and tragic fate. \nSchumann was a great admirer of Schubert’s music and played a crucial role in promoting Schubert’s music. \nCarl Baermann (1810–1885) was the son of the famous clarinet virtuoso Heinrich Baermann\, for whom Weber composed his clarinet works. As a child he was taught the clarinet and the basset horn by his father. He played occasionally in the Munich court orchestra when he was 14 years old\, and was appointed its second clarinetist in 1832. When his father retired in 1834\, Carl succeeded him as principal clarinetist\, holding that position until he retired in 1880. During a tour in Europe in 1833\, he and his father premiered their friend Mendelssohn’s Concert Pieces Opp. 113 and 114 to great acclaim. The Pieces were composed in exchange for a culinary treat of sweet dumplings and cheese strudel. Apart from their musical prowess\, the Baermanns were renowned for their cooking. Even the royal house of Saxony craved their dumpling specialty made from flour\, yeast\, sugar\, butter\, and eggs and cooked in a wine sauce. Carl also shaped clarinet history through his pedagogical writings\, editorial articles\, and compositions that were popular with clarinet virtuosos; and for his mechanical design of the clarinet—the Baermann-Ottensteiner key system\, which he developed based on the widely-used Müller system in the late 19th century. \nPhoto credit: Wikimedia Commons

SUMMARY:Syncopated Stages: Black Disruptions to the Great White Way
DESCRIPTION:Although the common nickname for Broadway\, “the Great White Way\,” refers\, historically\, to its dazzling lights\, the phrase also suggests the ways in which many histories of New York theater center white artists. Black artists\, though\, have been important shapers of musical theater in the United States before the electric light was ever used on stage. In the early 20th century\, Black composers and writers created many popular musicals in New York that helped define the genre\, setting it apart from 19th-century traditions. New forms of syncopation\, the disruption of the dominant rhythm\, and narratives composed and written by Black artists challenged the prevailing sounds and depictions of Black people on stage. These innovations were more than stylistic. They pushed back against exclusion and stereotype\, laying the groundwork for generations of Black artists whose contributions have reshaped Broadway. Syncopated Stages spotlights their work\, acknowledges the challenges they faced\, and celebrates the brilliance of what they made. We invite you to explore how Black artists transformed the New York stage and how their work still reverberates today. \nThis exhibition is organized by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and curated by playwright\, professor\, and scholar Michael Dinwiddie. \nPhoto credit: The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts

SUMMARY:An Ecology of Quilts
DESCRIPTION:An Ecology of Quilts: The Natural History of American Textiles brings together approximately 30 examples\, spanning the 18th to 20th centuries\, from the Museum’s rich collection of more than 600 quilts and presents them from an ecological perspective\, tracing patterns of relationships between the environment and traditional quilting practices. \nThis groundbreaking exploration of the natural history of American textiles proposes an eco-critical inquiry into the many facets of global material culture that emerged in the early American republic through the 20th century. \nLooking beyond the quiltmaker\, An Ecology of Quilts is centered around the origins of textile production and how it informs the artistry of quiltmaking\, exploring the environmental and social impact of cultivating and harvesting raw materials; the networks of overland and ocean trade required to transport dyestuffs\, fibers\, and fabrics; and the technologies and industrial techniques developed to process them\, such as the cotton gin—all of which allowed quiltmaking to flourish as a quintessential American art form. \nAs An Ecology of Quilts documents\, textiles represent an intricately woven web of environmental resources\, craft and scientific knowledge\, global movement\, and creative collaboration. Speaking not only to the work of individual American quilters but also to the contributions of countless artisans and laborers around the globe\, quilts survive as powerful material metaphors for human relationships and entanglements within the natural world.

\nPhoto credit: New York Public Library for the Performing Arts

SUMMARY:OUT of the Jewelry Box
DESCRIPTION:Expanding the voices represented in MAD’s permanent collection\, OUT of the Jewelry Box considers the importance of queer perspectives in the world of studio and contemporary art jewelry. The exhibition showcases an extraordinary gift from Ron Porter and Joe Price\, who have collected and worn art jewelry throughout their forty-one-year relationship\, nine of those legally married. \nOn view are 56 newly acquired works from The Porter Price Collection by queer artists and their allies\, and 22 pieces by queer artists already represented in MAD’s permanent collection. The jewelry dates from the 1950s to the present\, and stories from the artists and collectors about the role of jewelry in the construction of queer histories and identities accompany each work. \nPhoto credit: Jenna Bascom

SUMMARY:Mary Lattimore

The New Yorker calls Lattimore’s solo work “complex and expansive\, songs that evoke seismic emotional shifts… not so much music to zone out to as music to self-actualize by.” Collaboration remained at the heart of her work\, showing up in the form of joint creations with Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan\, as well as in contributions from members of Slowdive and The Cure on her 2023 album Goodbye\, Hotel Arkada.

\nPhoto credit: New York Public Library for the Performing Arts
