History
Lincoln Square evolved from its modest beginnings as a pastoral hamlet into one of New York City’s most iconic and culturally vibrant neighborhoods. Though much of its history is known, one mystery remains: Where did the name “Lincoln Square” come from?
Some historians claim the area was originally named after a little-known landowner in the early 1800s. Others offer evidence that Abraham Lincoln himself was the district’s namesake. Learn more about Lincoln Square’s rich history, and see how the area grew from a small triangle of land, now Richard Tucker Park, into the home of San Juan Hill – a thriving shopping, dining, residential, and cultural district.
